METHODOLOGY

THE FRAMEWORK FOR RESEARCH

comp exam research desk.jpg

Methodology is a crucial part of thesis research because it outlines the approach and techniques used to gather, analyze, and interpret data. A well-defined methodology ensures that the research is systematic, replicable, and credible. It provides transparency in how the research is conducted, allowing others to assess the validity of the results. Additionally, a solid methodology helps in addressing research questions effectively while minimizing biases or errors, thereby strengthening the overall quality and reliability of the study.

There are various types of research methodologies, each suited to different kinds of studies. Quantitative methods focus on numerical data and statistical analysis, while qualitative methods emphasize understanding social phenomena through non-numerical data such as interviews, observations, and case studies. Mixed methods combine both approaches for a more comprehensive analysis. Action research, experimental, and historical methodologies are also widely used. For my initial thesis questions, I deemed historical research and ethnographic research as the most pertinent methodologies. These approaches allow for both an in-depth exploration of past events and an immersive study of craft within cultural settings, making them highly relevant for understanding the complexities of my research area.

ARTS & CRAFT EDUCATION RESEARCH

HISTORICAL AND CURRENT EXISTENCE, DEFICIT, AND IMPACT

BYU - grad thesis writing - 5.jpeg

In order to properly endorse craft education, first I had to define and defend it. This portion of research chronicles the history of art and craft education; debates the differences between the practice of 'art' and 'craft'; documents the importance of craft media in contemporary art; and asserts the positive impact of craft education vs. the detriment of its deficit.
